John Messenger

I wish that beauty
was a thing discussed by politicians
and heads of states.

Perhaps it would feel less strange
to be here.

That the balance of a thing –
the cadence of color
and line,

the way it can speak of higher things
that put the lower things
in nice perspective –

was its start,
not its finish.

And that all this was seen
not just from the fringes
but from the center –

where the hands would use the eyes to see,
and the work would be for beauty.
